Research and Planning: Audience

In order to construct a successful product, it is relevant to make sure that I fully understand who is going to be the consumers of the music video and engage with the text effectively. To do so, I am going to look into the audience of similar products on the market, namely focussing on the band Busted as a whole due to the fact that they wrote the song itself that I am working with.

The song 'Loner In Love' was not released as a single by the band, therefore there is no official music video existing. However, looking at Youtube, users have uploaded the video with pictures to go alongside the audio. I have taken the copy with the highest number of views to allow for a true perspective of the feelings towards the song with my intended audience.
With a total of 57,946 views, I can see through this quantitative data that the song is very mainstream as it has a large number of watchers even without any promotion through a music video or single release. Therefore, I know that my audience are fans of the song and would enjoy a visual to fit with the audio file as it is popular on the video sharing site Youtube without any form of present visual representation.
From a qualitative perspective, the video itself has a 105 likes and only 7 dislikes; the inclusion of this data tells me that there is a very small majority that did not enjoy the song. The limited number of likes compared to the views could be down to the fact that Youtube have only recently introduced this 'like/dislike' system in place of the previous star ratings, which distorts my findings a little but is still valuable in finding out the feel for the song.
In terms of the user comments made on the video, the majority are very positive. Most talk about missing the band, feeling that this is a beautiful song and relating to the lyrics behind it. From this, I can establish that the audience feel a connection to the themes portrayed within the lyrics, so therefore would want a music video to reflect this; the convention of matching visual to audio would have to be manipulated as well as following the narrative in a televised bard type style, showing both artist and deeper meanings through visuals.

Another valuable source in studying my audience is looking deeper into the reviews of the album that the song 'Loner in Love' is located on. 'A Present For Everyone' was released in 2003 yet is still avaliable to buy on Amazon.co.uk and still offers a selection of reviews from over the years.
The website is useful to highlight the most favourable and critical reviews as shown above. Again, it emphasises the audience who enjoyed the album the most, who appear to be in the demographics category of girls in the teenage age period as shown by the username of the review to the left. The more controversial user review on the right talks of how his sister plays the album 'too loud for comfort' so this helps me to establish who I am looking to impress and engage with my music video.

As I was a fan of Busted myself when they were together, I have a pretty good idea of what my typical audience member is and a trusted gut feeling.
I have designed a made up, typical audience member who could be seen as a Busted fan and interested in my music video.

Name: Gemma
Age:13
Gender: Female
Occupation: Student in high school
Interests: Music, clothes, makeup, boys, shopping
Favourite films: Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Finding Nemo
Favourite colour: Pink
Most prized poccession: iPod
Likes: Hearts, stars, bright colours

Collating all this valuable audience data has allowed me to establish a much clearer picture of who I will be looking to aim my music video towards and bearing my typical audience member in mind, I should now be able to make it as appealing and engaging for them as possible.

Research and Planning- Genre

Through my analyses, I have looked at two separate genres and seen clear differences in the style chosen. As I have selected which song I would like to create a music video for, I will now look in further detail at what this genre means and what the expectations and conventions are within this.

Busted were a British band, forming in 2000 and breaking up in 2005. During their existence, they arguably managed to become one of the most successful boybands of the 00's era in Britain, which appeared to lead a shift from the concept of an all singing and dancing boyband to one based on rock instrumentation. For this reason, it is quite difficult to confine the band into just one genre. iTunes defines them as rock, Wikipedia (a reference site that can be updated/submitted by anyone so slightly unreliable in cases) as pop rock and the website www.ratemymusic.com classifies them as boy band, pop punk.

As I have already analysed the Busted music for 'Year 3000', I have managed to establish an idea of how the band identify themselves in terms of genre. With a target audience of teenagers who want to 'rebel' against the teeny sickly sweet pop songs, Busted are the next safe bet as there is just enough reverb to distort them from pure pop. I talk from my own experience as a young teenager when Busted were in their most popular stage that everyone loved them for being slightly against the norm of S Club 7 and Britney Spears, pop icons at the time. The video I looked at (Year 3000) followed a narrative, finishing with a performance and the lyrics included managed to create a lot of imagery, with the chance to include lots of interesting shots and intertextuality too.

My chosen cover of the song 'Loner In Love' however is slightly different to the Busted original, in terms of genre. This is due to the fact that the singer has only got the equipment of his solo voice and his acoustic guitar. It also slightly changes the conventions that would be expected in the music video itself as it brings a wider concept than just from instrumental boy band. Acoustic music videos often show a large number of close ups of the artist alone, playing their guitar in a quiet place such as outside. The focus is on the music talents of the artist themselves so this makes for this being a highlight in the feature. This style of music also appears much more serious and focused than regular pop videos, with shots offering a much deeper theme and meaning behind them.

Therefore, I feel that I must work to offer the target audience of Busted fans a video that is a bit more serious than what they may expect from the band to establish this acoustic feel and take it into consideration as it changes the dynamics of the song quite significantly. I like the idea of a theme running through the video to create a deeper and more serious aspect and will concentrate my efforts on finding the adequate balance of both pop, boyband and acoustic music.
